WHAT WE DO

Renewable Energy

Powering Sustainable Communities Through Clean, Affordable, and Reliable Energy

At Aid the Needy Kenya (ATN-K), we believe that access to clean and reliable energy is essential for improving livelihoods, strengthening essential services, protecting the environment, and accelerating sustainable development. Our Renewable Energy Programme is committed to expanding access to affordable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly energy solutions for underserved communities across Kenya.

Many rural communities continue to experience limited or unreliable access to electricity, affecting education, healthcare, agriculture, water supply, and economic opportunities. Dependence on traditional fuels such as firewood and charcoal also contributes to deforestation, indoor air pollution, and climate change.

ATN-K works with communities, schools, health facilities, farmers, county governments, private sector partners, and development organizations to promote renewable energy technologies that improve quality of life while protecting natural resources. Our solutions include solar energy systems, clean cooking technologies, solar-powered water systems, renewable energy for schools and health facilities, and energy solutions that support agriculture and small businesses.

Through innovation and community participation, we are helping build resilient communities powered by clean energy.

Our Approach

Our Renewable Energy Programme combines technology, sustainability, and community empowerment to improve access to modern energy services.

Our approach focuses on:

  • Expanding access to clean energy
  • Supporting climate-smart development
  • Reducing dependence on fossil fuels and biomass
  • Improving energy access for education and healthcare
  • Promoting renewable energy entrepreneurship
  • Supporting productive use of energy
  • Building local technical capacity
  • Protecting the environment

By integrating renewable energy into community development, we create solutions that generate long-term social, economic, and environmental benefits.

What We Do

Solar Energy for Schools

Reliable electricity creates better learning environments.

ATN-K supports schools through the installation of solar energy systems that provide power for:

  • Classrooms
  • Computer laboratories
  • Digital learning equipment
  • School administration offices
  • Security lighting
  • Libraries
  • Science laboratories

Access to renewable energy enables schools to extend learning hours, improve digital education, and reduce operational costs.

Renewable Energy for Health Facilities

Healthcare services depend on reliable electricity.

We support health facilities by providing solar energy systems that power:

  • Maternity wards
  • Vaccine refrigeration
  • Medical equipment
  • Lighting for emergency services
  • Laboratory equipment
  • Water pumping systems
  • Digital health systems

Reliable energy improves the quality of healthcare services, particularly in rural communities.

Solar-Powered Water Systems

Clean water and renewable energy work hand in hand.

ATN-K installs solar-powered systems for:

  • Community boreholes
  • Water pumping
  • Rural water supply schemes
  • Schools
  • Health centres
  • Livestock watering points

These systems provide sustainable access to clean water while reducing dependence on expensive fuel-powered pumps.

Solar Irrigation

Reliable irrigation enables farmers to produce food throughout the year.

Our programme supports:

  • Solar-powered irrigation systems
  • Drip irrigation
  • Water-efficient farming
  • Climate-smart agriculture
  • Increased crop production
  • Reduced irrigation costs

Solar irrigation improves food security while helping farmers adapt to changing climate conditions.

Clean Cooking Solutions

Traditional cooking methods contribute to indoor air pollution and environmental degradation.

ATN-K promotes clean cooking technologies such as:

  • Energy-efficient cookstoves
  • Clean biomass technologies
  • Solar cookers
  • Alternative cooking fuels
  • Household energy education

These solutions improve household health, reduce fuel costs, and decrease pressure on forests.

Renewable Energy Skills Development

Building local technical capacity is essential for sustainability.

We provide training in:

  • Solar photovoltaic installation
  • Solar system maintenance
  • Electrical safety
  • Renewable energy entrepreneurship
  • Energy efficiency
  • Green technology skills

This creates employment opportunities while ensuring communities can maintain renewable energy systems locally.

Community Awareness and Energy Education

Knowledge encourages greater adoption of renewable energy.

Our awareness programmes cover:

  • Benefits of renewable energy
  • Energy conservation
  • Climate change
  • Environmental protection
  • Safe energy use
  • Household energy efficiency
  • Sustainable energy practices

Educated communities are better equipped to make informed energy choices.

Our Areas of Impact

Our Renewable Energy Programme creates lasting benefits for communities across Kenya.
