WHAT WE DO

Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)

Ensuring Safe Water, Improved Sanitation, and Healthy Communities

At Aid the Needy Kenya (ATN-K), we believe that access to clean water, safe sanitation, and proper hygiene is a fundamental human right and the foundation of healthy, productive, and resilient communities. Our Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) Programme is dedicated to improving access to safe drinking water, promoting hygienic practices, strengthening sanitation infrastructure, and reducing waterborne diseases across underserved communities in Kenya.

Many rural communities continue to face challenges such as limited access to clean water, inadequate sanitation facilities, poor hygiene practices, and increasing pressure on water resources due to climate change. Women and children are often disproportionately affected, spending hours each day collecting water instead of attending school or engaging in income-generating activities.

ATN-K works with communities, county governments, schools, health facilities, water authorities, and development partners to provide sustainable WASH solutions that improve health, enhance education, strengthen livelihoods, and promote environmental sustainability.

Through community participation, innovative technologies, and long-term partnerships, we are transforming lives by ensuring that every community has access to safe water and dignified sanitation.

Our Approach

Our WASH Programme integrates infrastructure development, community education, environmental conservation, and local capacity building to deliver sustainable water and sanitation solutions.

Our approach focuses on:

  • Access to safe and reliable water
  • Improved sanitation facilities
  • Hygiene promotion and behaviour change
  • Community ownership and management
  • Climate-resilient water systems
  • School and healthcare WASH services
  • Environmental protection
  • Sustainable operation and maintenance

By empowering communities to manage their own water and sanitation systems, we ensure long-term sustainability and lasting impact.

What We Do

Safe Water Supply

Access to clean water changes lives.

ATN-K develops sustainable water supply systems that provide reliable access to safe drinking water for households, schools, healthcare facilities, and community institutions.

Our interventions include:

  • Borehole drilling and rehabilitation
  • Solar-powered water pumping systems
  • Community water supply schemes
  • Protected springs
  • Water storage tanks
  • Rainwater harvesting systems
  • Water distribution networks
  • Water kiosks for underserved communities

These projects reduce the distance families travel to collect water while improving public health and productivity.

Sanitation Improvement

Proper sanitation is essential for preventing disease and protecting the environment.

We support communities by constructing and improving:

  • Household sanitation facilities
  • School toilets and handwashing stations
  • Health facility sanitation infrastructure
  • Community sanitation blocks
  • Accessible sanitation facilities for persons with disabilities
  • Wastewater management systems

Improved sanitation promotes dignity, safety, and healthier living conditions for everyone.

Hygiene Promotion

Infrastructure alone is not enough—healthy behaviours save lives.

ATN-K conducts hygiene education programmes covering:

  • Proper handwashing with soap
  • Safe water storage and handling
  • Household hygiene
  • Food hygiene
  • Menstrual hygiene management
  • Personal hygiene
  • Disease prevention
  • Environmental cleanliness

These awareness campaigns help reduce the spread of preventable diseases and improve overall community health.

School WASH Programmes

Healthy learners perform better in school.

We support schools by providing:

  • Safe drinking water
  • Gender-responsive sanitation facilities
  • Handwashing stations
  • Menstrual hygiene support
  • Hygiene education
  • School health clubs
  • Water conservation education

Improved WASH services contribute to better attendance, especially for girls, and create healthier learning environments.

WASH in Health Facilities

Reliable water and sanitation are critical for quality healthcare.

ATN-K supports health facilities through:

  • Clean water supply systems
  • Solar-powered water pumping
  • Safe sanitation facilities
  • Hand hygiene stations
  • Infection prevention measures
  • Waste management systems

These improvements strengthen healthcare delivery and reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections.

Water Resource Management

Protecting water sources ensures long-term sustainability.

Our programme promotes:

  • Watershed protection
  • Spring conservation
  • Riverbank restoration
  • Catchment area management
  • Community water committees
  • Water conservation awareness
  • Climate-resilient water planning

Healthy ecosystems ensure reliable water supplies for future generations.

Community Capacity Building

Sustainable water systems require strong local leadership.

ATN-K trains communities in:

  • Water system operation and maintenance
  • Financial management
  • Governance of water committees
  • Hygiene promotion
  • Water quality monitoring
  • Conflict resolution over water resources

Building local capacity ensures communities can manage and maintain WASH facilities independently.

Our Areas of Impact

Our Water, Sanitation & Hygiene Programme delivers lasting benefits for communities across Kenya.

Improved Access to Safe Water

Families gain reliable access to clean drinking water, reducing the time spent collecting water and improving quality of life.

Better Public Health

Improved sanitation and hygiene reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and diarrhoeal illnesses, particularly among children.

Improved Education

Access to safe water and sanitation in schools creates healthier learning environments, improves attendance, and supports better educational outcomes.

Women’s and Girls’ Empowerment

Closer water sources and improved sanitation reduce the burden on women and girls, allowing them more time for education, employment, and community participation.

Climate Resilience

Climate-resilient water systems, rainwater harvesting, and watershed conservation help communities adapt to droughts and changing weather patterns.

Stronger Community Ownership

Community-led management of water systems promotes accountability, sustainability, and long-term operation of WASH facilities.

Through sustainable infrastructure, community education, environmental conservation, and strategic partnerships, we are creating healthier communities where people can live, learn, and thrive with dignity.

Looking Ahead

As we continue to expand our Water, Sanitation & Hygiene Programme, we aim to:

  • Construct and rehabilitate more community water systems.
  • Expand solar-powered water supply projects in rural areas.

  • Strengthen hygiene education and behaviour change campaigns.
  • Promote rainwater harvesting and water conservation initiatives.
  • Train additional community water committees in system management.
  • Protect more watersheds and water catchment areas.
  • Build stronger partnerships to improve access to safe water and sanitation across Kenya.

Together with our partners and communities, we are working towards a future where every family has access to clean water, every child learns in a safe and healthy environment, and every community enjoys the benefits of sustainable WASH services.

Our Vision for WASH

At ATN-K, we envision a Kenya where no family walks long distances in search of clean water, no child misses school because of inadequate sanitation, and no community suffers from preventable waterborne diseases.

By investing in sustainable WASH solutions today, we are improving health, protecting the environment, empowering communities, and building a future where clean water and sanitation are accessible to all.

“Clean water is life, sanitation protects dignity, and hygiene saves lives. Together, we are creating healthier communities and a more sustainable future for every generation.”Aid the Needy Kenya (ATN-K)
